Broad Street Was, Is, Will Be

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT REPAIRS & IMPROVEMENTS COMING TO BROAD STREET

[español abajo]

Starting the week of June 6th, 2022, Broad Street will receive a long-awaited investment from the city to make it safer and more accessible for drivers, pedestrians, bus riders, bicycles, wheelchairs, residents and business owners.

Broad Street is the Latino community’s central corridor in Providence, but when it comes to investing in maintenance and improvements to the streets and sidewalks, it seems like Broad Street is never the priority.

Since 2016, city and state leaders have been talking about investing in the Broad Street Latino Cultural Corridor. After years of listening sessions, community feedback, planning and delays, the improvements that have been promised are finally being made. Broad Street will get:

  1. New pavement for a smoother street with clear lines and fewer potholes
  2. Fixed sidewalks with wheelchair-accessible curbs and better crosswalks
  3. Better bus stops so that buses don’t create more traffic having to weave in and out of traffic every few blocks
  4. A two-way urban trail making it easier for more people to shop, dine and get around

Working closely with the community, organizations like the Providence Streets Coalition have helped the voices in the community be heard. We have worked with business owners, residents and city leaders to make sure:

  • There will still be parking on both sides of the street
  • There will be no change to trash and recycling pickup for residents or businesses
  • There will be no change for food trucks parking on the east side of the street and trucks parking on the west side of the street will have more room than before to serve customers
  • The project will reflect the Latino cultural traditions that make Broad Street great
